Reethi I. came to Express Scripts after an internship with the department of chronic disease prevention and health promotion at the World Health Organization (WHO) where she supported research on HIV and cancer by identifying best-practice models of care for HIV-AIDS related cancer types. In her role at Express Scripts, she is responsible for providing timely and scholarly research related to use of prescription medications that help develop innovative products to improve patient outcomes.

“I like my job because it actually pays me to do what I love doing – providing solutions for healthcare issues that can be readily applied to see actual improved outcomes,” Reethi says. “I work in a one-of-a-kind state-of-the-art lab with the most brilliant people in the business-- who share the same passion and commitment towards the same goal. And I get paid for it. Who wouldn’t like that?”

It is likely that no one in the world knows more about your future health behavior than Suman K.. Suman is among a cadre of young scientists at Express Scripts poring through large datasets to create algorithms that predict what you will do in the future. Among his recent algorithms are some that predict how likely it is that you will take your medication as prescribed by your doctors (the cost of medication non-adherence in the US is $100-300 billion annually). This team also predicts how likely it is that you will return to the hospital following a discharge (costs related to return visits are approximately $25 billion annually). These challenges have remained untouched largely because healthcare providers didn’t know how to tackle them until it was too late. Algorithms such as Suman’s will help providers to focus on patients who are most likely to present problems and thereby keep all of our health bills in check. “Predicting the future, though complex, is always exciting and fun. That’s what I do every day at Express Scripts. The most interesting part is to come up with a strategy to potentially improve the health outcomes of patients,” Suman says. “The bottom line is… my job is all about predicting the future to save lives and that’s what gives me a whole lot of satisfaction.”

    I have been working at Express Scripts full-time (Less than a year)


    I joined the technology organization 2 months ago, here are my observations thus far:
    + empowered employees at all levels who are encouraged to challenge the status quo
    + helping clients and patients are truly the focus of the company... a VERY noble mission
    + Alignment at the highest c-suite levels that technology and data is a major competitive advantage
    + little bureaucracy and an org structure that feels flat and like a community. Every employee gets to hear and ask questions to the CIO every other week. No ivory towers.
    + a technologists dream: agile, CI/CD, TDD, cloud (PCF), big data/analytics, mobile and watch apps, hack-a-thons, collaborative workspaces. This is the journey the organization is on.
    + great culture: supporting charities and community service is important; fun at work with ping pong tables, adult coloring murals, March Madness viewing party. Casual dress code is also nice.


    - I've been here two months and can find very little cons. The company has gone through a major cultural transformation over the last 2 years with new C-suite leadership. I did read through the glass door reviews before I accepted my position and I can say that most of the reviews are based on the old culture. I am very glad I joined the Express Scripts team.

    Advice to Management

    Keep the unwavering focus on the patients and clients. Internally: keep the focus on the employees and their empowerment to make a difference.

    I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Express Scripts.


    First round was a phone interview with a recruiter. After that, I was given a second interview where I had to record myself answering a series of questions. The second interview lasted approximately 30 mins.

    After going through the second interview, I never heard back from the company; even after I had emailed the recruiter about their decision. I was a little offended by the lack of communication. A simple rejection email would have been thoughtful.
