I worked at OSIsoft full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

A lot of good people use to work there with a lot of diverse and interesting backgrounds. The PI system could be "best in class" for chemical, pharma, oil, and utility industries relative to the management of time-series sensor data.

    Cons

The company vision is that of a nitch player in the enterprise software business so a lack of desire to expand horizontally to adjacent industries if ANY kind of product changes are required. Goal conflict in the company's core tenants - "being a pathfinder"/"sell what you make" are mutually exclusive and contradictory. Company's sales model is direct primarily, but they lack enough professional services and partners...

    Advice to Management

Going after new markets and "crossing the chasm" into mainstream adoption requires an "invasion force" not a "sniper." If you are serious about knocking down the adjacent "bowling pins," you need to change your "nitch player" thinking and change the product as required. Offer stock options to employees, everyone else in the Bay area does. The cost of living is so high that the only way for the employee to build wealth...

I have been working at OSIsoft full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Good health care plans and the people

    Cons

Management is lacking, not transparent and seem to give you dishonest explanations when you ask questions. Some leads are way better to have than others definitely experiencing micromanagement

    Advice to Management

You should allow your frontline employees to review their leads

I have been working at OSIsoft full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Most employees are very talented engineers Salary is competitive Work life balance is great

    Cons

Lack of product direction. Keeps changing every few years. Management is very lax. So the best people don't stay and some sub-par employees remain forever and get promotion based on seniority, not performance

    Advice to Management

Be more in touch with your reports and allow engineers to grow

I have been working at OSIsoft full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

Great Work Life Balance (not much work to do for most teams anymore)

    Cons

The company is currently without a visionary. The President stopped coming to work over a year ago and then silently exited. What does the CEO do? Who knows? Haven't seen him attend a single all hands meeting in the last 5 years, and the only time he does show up is at the annual user conference for another jargon filled splatter of asinine conjecture on where the industry is going. "We have to be pioneers and leave no...

    Advice to Management

Keep starting over every 2-3 years. I'm sure eventually you'll build the perfect solution just in time to be completely irrelevant as other companies surpass us.

I have been working at OSIsoft full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

So many great people work at this company in lower roles, encourages training and development, and I truly enjoy my role.

    Cons

No leadership, 98% of those in executive roles should not be there, no communication, the executive cliques are painful to watch, as if they cannot function without each other.

    Advice to Management

Hire someone from outside to run the company and make many changes

I worked at OSIsoft full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

OSIsoft provides a fantastic product mix and top support to its customers. They hire intelligent people and work hard to provide the best products in their category. If you are good in a sales role and understand process industries such as paper, gas, chemical or oil, you can make great money - I sure did!

    Cons

I did not always feel that top management cares about the sales division. The sales team seems to be treated as a necessary evil.

I worked at OSIsoft full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

This was my first job out of college and I was given many opportunities to learn and contribute during my tenure at osisoft. OSIsoft attracts smart, driven people to engineering and tech support. The culture isn't stressful, but that comes with the expectation that you'll get the work done. You can learn a lot here as a developer if it's your first job. Near a Bart station in the Bay area which is a huge plus....

    Cons

The pay is below average and the tech stack doesn't allow one to develop transferable skills (it's a Windows shop, which isn't bad but can be limiting depending on what you're looking for). Poor communication between decision makers and people who have to implement things. There is a lot of "putting the cart before the horse" and "solution in search of a problem" when it comes to new product development. This can...

    Advice to Management

Listen to sales and the feedback they have. Many were engineers and have domain experience and know what our customers need. Remove communication barriers between engineering and sales. The company has grown a lot and has lost the culture that enabled OSIsoft to succeed in the past. Also understand it's not the 80s and 90s anymore. Other companies know how to write good software. OSIsoft can't get by by being the only...
