I worked at Roche full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are a bunch of awesome people to work with. The project is super cool and involves multiple cutting edge technologies which is honestly pretty special. Consistent high attendance happy hours.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't know what they're doing, how to hire managers, how to fire toxic employees, etc Still no sales. Below market wage. A lot of below average, hard to work with employees.

    Advice to Management

As a pre-acquisition employee, I got to see a lot about how Genia's internals functioned. I'd recommend prioritizing valuing your lower level employees. Upper management needs to show what company values they believe in and lead by example. They tend to be way to focused on just "getting the job done" as an excuse to ignore systemic problems.

I have been working at Roche full-time

    Pros

Very friendly atmosphere. Highly skilled specialists. Excellent benefits. Management makes a lot of efforts to keep people happy.

    Cons

Very complicated organizational structure and, as a result, too many levels of programs/projects management and people who actually do not produce anything useful

I have been working at Roche for more than a year

    Pros

The people at the site are very fun and welcoming to be around; it's easy to learn about areas outside your discipline as almost everyone is eager to talk about what they do. The company is very accomadating of the people's needs and desires and the happy hours are very fun

    Cons

I joined the company as it was in the process of converting from start up to a part of the Roche conglomerate, and I feel that there are a lot of people who are very annoyed at the red tape that has started to pop up. The excessive red tape, though sometimes necessary, hinders progress greatly, especially when workers are expected to continue with the same results while navigating suddenly abundant privacy... settings and restrictions.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to ensure workers understand why changes that are made to workflow are necessary. Open office hours are helpful, but definitely take some time for some town halls where people may ask questions about changes in processes. Also consider looking into ways to reduce red tape while maintaining the privacy. There are practices done in Switzerland that simply dont make sense in the Bay Area, and those are... practices that may restrict Roche from keeping up with the rat race of the Bay.

    I worked at Roche full-time

    Pros

good benefit. Working for a good cause. Roche has some outstanding (old) products.

    Cons

Mafia-styled management culture. Even you do not know anything, as long as you board-lined belong to the gang, you are better off. Too many "professional" managers, not hands-on, do not know much about sequencing technology. All they do is to fight turf all day long. Age, gender discrimination are wide-spread, and encouraged.

    Advice to Management

Shake up management team. Bring fresh blood, expert in technology, not in politics. Improve company culture to be more progressive.

I have been working at Roche full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Company's mission, improving diagnostic for cancer patients, really motivates you to work harder. The leadership team has continued with the founder's passion successfully. Competetive Salary (Even in Silicon Valley). Excellent Benefits (401k and Medical Insurance). But if earning money is your only goal you would do better to look else where. Challenging Work. Although this is Ventana Medical, This is really a... division of Roche Diagnostics, which is a behemoth of a company.

    Cons

The company is very process oriented. This is really a necessity for FDA regulated companies. Not a Startup Culture.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.
