At Herman Miller, design-driven problem solving is a practice, a philosophy, and the means by which we seek to improve the world. Which is why, when it comes to some really huge challenges, like creating a greener planet and more equitable world, we remain optimistic. Design is fueled by optimism, the idea that we can devise great solutions to big thorny problems. Have we got a long way to go as a company to hit our goals? Absolutely. But we believe that, together, we can get there. For more on our journey to a better world, check out our report.

Your gender identity and sexual orientation are pieces of what make you you. But in Michigan, where we're based, it's still legal to fire someone because they're gay or lesbian. That's why we, along with the many other organizations of the Michigan Competitive Workforce Coalition, are fighting to have gender identity and sexual orientation included in an update of Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.
Being inclusive is both right and good. It's right because we value the whole person and all they have to offer. It's good because to find innovative solutions in a complex world, we need that diversity of perspectives. Read more about our Inclusion and Diversity efforts in our Better World Report.
As our global community has grown, so too have our philanthropic efforts. Our employee-led foundation, Herman Miller Cares, gives over $2 million annually. Over the last four years, we’ve doubled our international giving. Best of all, it’s not the executives who determine which causes get financial and volunteer support, it’s the everyday workers who guide the foundation’s giving.
What does lean manufacturing mean to Herman Miller? 1) Always put the customer first. 2) People are our most important resource. 3) Continuous improvement is a way of life. 4) Focus on the workplace, where small changes lead to big gains.
You know how important the right healthcare plan is to your life, but what happens when feeling right requires more than a flu shot and an annual checkup? Is your employer there for you? At Herman Miller, we’ve designed our benefits programs to extend well beyond physical health, because we know that mental, emotional, and financial health are big pieces of the puzzle and it's important to us that everyone can bring their whole self to work each day.
Herman Miller was founded in Zeeland, Michigan, a close-knit community where people have always helped each other out without thinking much about it. It’s what being a community means. As our company has grown to include new brands, new people, and new continents, we’ve stayed true to that sense of community born over 100 years ago on the shores of Lake Michigan.
In 1953, our founder D.J. De Pree mandated that “We will be a good corporate neighbor by being a good steward of the environment.” See how we’re living up to D.J.’s decree 65 years later.
The only way to get to truly innovative answers is to constantly seek out new ideas, new people, and new perspectives. We do it by working every day to create and foster a diverse community of colleagues and collaborators. Which is why we’re so honored to have once again been named Corporation of the Year by the Michigan Minority Supplier Diversity Council.
