Applied on Handshake and emailed by HR for a phone screen. She told me about how this is the Minneapolis office for Sogeti USA, has about 80 employees, their career paths, why consulting is better than contracting, and their benefits.
Next, 35 min technical screen call with a sr consultant. He went through my resume and portfolio website, asking various questions based on what he saw. He said my resume looked good. He asked me interface vs abstract class, garbage collector, typescript vs javascript, python vs javascript, what is angular, what do you know about agile, and some others. He told me a lot of helpful things and gave me insights into being a consultant for a career. You get to learn a lot by moving to different clients while staying at Sogeti keeping your benefits. He talked about why consulting is better than contracting.
I was invited for a 1-hour, onsite interview. They asked me to prep a 5-min presentation beforehand that consisted of my experience, why I wanted to be a consultant, and why I wanted to work at Sogeti. There were two directors and the VP in the conference room. They were really relaxed and made me feel comfortable. The presentation went well and I sat down to talk to them for the next 50 minutes. They started by asking me some questions like how do you manage your time with sports, what technologies do you like to learn, what do you do in your free time, rank your skills in this and that, etc. They did most of the talking and answered a lot of my questions. It was more a get to know you sort of thing and to see if I was a fit for consulting, because not everyone is. They said project lengths can range from 6 weeks to 6 years, but 6 months is pretty average. Their older consultants who no longer want to move are typically the ones on the 1+ year long projects/clients.
A week later I was made an offer and I was able to negotiate it up a little bit.
