I have been working at Hologic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hologic has proven to be a turn around success story under the current leadership. The CEO has focused on growth. He is making the right, albeit at times difficult, decisions in order to remain on track to stay the course of growth.

    Cons

We have opportunities for improving communication between sites, divisions, and organization wide. We announce new senior leaders (this is great) but don't communicate changes to reward and recognition programs (just one example).

    Advice to Management

Please consider revamping Hologic's communications practices for internal employee communication. Revamp distribution lists so people don't get missed.

The Internal communication team members are often difficult to partner with as well.

I have been working at Hologic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Commitment to growth: company financial and personal professional.
    Open and honest culture.
Our work matters to patients, doctors, hospitals and labs.

    Cons

A little tight on some resources: people/staffing/titles, IT infrastructure
Greater integration w/ global would be good - too separate

    Advice to Management

Invest in the diagnostic business. It's rising.

I have been working at Hologic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - The mission: fighting cancer and women's health
    - The corporate koolaid is strong, but leaves one refreshed and has a great after-taste (buy-in on the company direction, mission, etc. is legitimate and easily noticeable across the organization)
    - Multi-discipline development team with talented engineers across functions
    - Desire to develop software "the right way", just requires some effort (e.g., management very supportive of process change where and when sensible, though a strong technical leader is required to define and execute the change)

    Cons

These are minor complaints that are easily forgotten about due to the pros.
    - Un-glamorous industrial facility
    - Often contention on lab space/resources

    Advice to Management

Keep talking the talk and walking the walk!

I have been working at Hologic full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Reasonably flexible schedule which is nice.

    Cons

There is no room for advancement unless you're a schmoozer. Good hard working loyal people are constantly overlooked while others who do NO real work get promotions.

Glass ceilings are in place. If you don't have a PhD, forget about it...

    Advice to Management

Take a REAL hard look at who has been around for an extended period of time and REALLY understand what they contribute to the company. Too many people get abused and pushed around and get no regonition for their hard work and expertise. People are taken advantage of and used while others get credit for work they do not do.

    Pros

Great work life balance, great flexibility with hours, positive culture, ability to learn new roles.

    Cons

Low salaries in comparison to industry standards. A great deal of change (re-org's, management, etc).

    Advice to Management

Better salaries! And some more consistency in positions and movement within company via re-orgs.

I have been working at Hologic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    • Retains good engineers (most software engineers are 6+ years at Hologic)
    • Good Work/Life balance (rarely over 45 hours per week for exempt employees)
    • Competitive benefits (including retirement vesting & continuing education compensation)
    • Good middle-management helps keep engineers productive
    • Focus on people and purpose, which comes naturally
    • Healthy internship program

    Cons

    • Understaffed engineering group means the group is susceptible to disturbances (even vacations can cause unexpected issues in workflow)
    • Despite understaffed group, salaries are moderate
    • Neglected requirements documents cause major problems for an FDA-regulated group
    • Bad software culture leans away from Agile and Unit Testing, leading to too much dependence on the competence of individual software engineers
    • Not enough communication with the end-clients during development leads to decisions in a vacuum
    • Small size leads to lack of horizontal movement opportunities ("locked in" to a role)
    • Very informal on-boarding process for new engineers (likely due to the fact that the group rarely hires new engineers, outside of interns), despite the fact that strong domain knowledge is required to function well

    Advice to Management

The R&D group needs to begin actively hiring new engineers now to prepare for product pipeline expansion ambitions down the road. Requests for more human resources from engineering middle-management should be taken very seriously if we expect to maintain or improve the quality of our products. Also, engineers dedicated to recording, maintaining, and enforcing our requirements should also be considered instead of assigning that task part-time to engineering management and systems engineers.

I worked at Hologic full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This company is employing excellent people, it has a noble product line, and it is thus far maintaining itself as consistent growth company.

    Cons

The company has gone big with "Self Service" - as a means of internal growth - which means that unique expertise is not used fully - being diluted by self-service tasks (for example, engineers processing Engineering Change Orders, expense reports, etc. - rather than focusing time on engineering) - Unfortunately the Co has no way of measuring the impact that the "Self Service" trend has on expertise productivity.

    Advice to Management

Management should create better ways to measure productivity of its contributors - how much time is actually being spent on the activities that individuals were hired for. Management should find robust ways to Identify key employees and demand the tools to appropriately reward & retain these key employees.
