I have been working at Mortenson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I really love working for Mortenson, they provide great benefits, great upward career advancement for quality work, great mentoring structure, competitive pay, and is a family run company which you can feel from the top.

    Cons

The projects we are going after and the customers we work with are very demanding - this seems to be the industry norm, but I wish leadership would listen to the cries for support to appropriately staff the team.
As with most construction jobs you should expect early days and long days, but expecting 6am-6pm work days hardly allows for proper work life balance, even if you are great at time management.

    Advice to Management

    Appropriately staff your projects!

Listen to ideas from your field and follow through, especially when it comes to onboarding members. I have heard amazing ideas come from them but they do not get put into action due to insufficient training or the company wanting to make a dime from the Yard.

Promote work/life balance. You can say all day that it is the individuals responsibility to manage their balance but managers, superintendents, among others in the field expect 10-12hr minimum days.

    Pros

Great company benefits and upper management really seems like they care and are approachable.

    Cons

Too many initiatives with very little guidance from middle management really hurts the morale for the team members.

I worked at Mortenson full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefit package is great and salary is very competitive.

    Cons

Supervisors abuse their authority. You feel like you are walked on instead of feeling like you belong on a team. If something goes wrong, it is your fault and the supervisor does not help you off your back.

Work/life balance is a struggle. If you want to leave early one day, you are looked down upon.

    Advice to Management

There should be a Leadership class held for anyone who has a position that oversee’s someone. Teach them that supervisors are not to sit on a pedestal commanding but rather a role model and exemplar for young professionals to look up to. This is meant by the words you speak and how you should react to resistance from the project.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Mortenson full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

High Profile Projects, Large PTO Package, the company is diversified and can keep you employed during down times

    Cons

Large projects are meat grinders with little accountability to leadership and turnover. They often take on high risk projects and often loose money on them. During my time there they only paid bonuses 1 out of 4 years due to projects of this nature. Burnout among employees is high.

Mentoring is non existent. It's all too often that you get placed on projects with leaders that are not experienced in the industry. I have seen it all too often in my tenure that people are placed into positions without proper guidance and support.

MEP is overworked and under appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Shed your ego. You are not as good as you think. Take time to train your people. Don't just drop people into positions without support. Stop manipulating people by saying you care. It's obvious you don't.
