I have been working at TWIA full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The benefits are awesome! Relaxed work environment. Everyone is kind and supportive. A lot of room to keep learning and move upward in the company. Manager wants to make your job easier and prep you to succeed. Training is one-on-one with experienced coworkers. General company atmosphere is dedicated to providing excellent customer service and doing right by the customers.

    Cons

Working with a lot of old systems. Enormous room for human error that continually cycles back to whoever is on the phones. Training is not standardized. There is extremely little helpful documentation on the backend to help people do their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Having internal documentation for department-specific policies and processes would be extremely helpful. My coworkers are MORE than happy to answer any questions I have, which is awesome. However I could spend less time interrupting them if there was something to refer to that would actually answer the questions I have.

I worked at TWIA for less than a year

    Pros

Most of the people there are nice and competent, but very few mentor-quality folks in the IT group. They compensate below market but claim to make it up in benefits and awards, YMMV.

    Cons

IT management is short-sighted and territorial. Productivity is measured by tickets and schedules, not by value or problems averted. Many people are called on-duty outside of normal hours for deployments on a regular basis several times a month, and nobody questions the need. Want to work remote? You'd better be teacher's pet. I've worked many years in Austin's tech scene, and never had a mandated dress code before this...

I have been working at TWIA full-time

    Pros

Health Insurance, Pension and 401k match

    Cons

If you are ambitious, collaborative, want a positive atmosphere or are experienced enough to know what normal vs. dysfunctional is you will eventually want to leave. The harder you work the more you will be over allocated across multiple projects and you will have to constantly explain and/or defend yourself every step of the way. The expected trend continues as another good employee announced they will be leaving the...

    Advice to Management

You have lost employee trust. You need to stop sweeping all the problems under the carpet and take some serious action to fix all the damage you have allowed to ruin the culture here. You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over and think the talented employees are going to stick around.

I have been working at TWIA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits, interesting work, nice mission

    Cons

Some managers need to learn how to respect their employees and communicate better.

    Advice to Management

Don't ignore the "stuff" going on in IT. It is damaging the entire Association. You do engagement surveys for a reason, don't ignore the comments.

I have been working at TWIA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Employees support each other Good benefits Good location

    Cons

Found out today another good employee is leaving because of bad management. The CIO has run off two PMO Directors now, several good IT managers and lots of really good employees have left. The environment of the IT department needs to change and that starts at the top. Several employees who didn't leave the company were lucky enough to move over to the business side so they can be treated with respect and have a...

I have been working at TWIA full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits. New telecommuting program is also great. I work on a great team and I am supremely satisfied with my manager and my teammates. There is a lot of good here.

    Cons

Instead of the various business units telling IT what they NEED, IT tells them what they're going to get. 99% of the time we get something we don't want, don't need, and actually doesn't work. All of our systems are riddled with problems and instead of taking time to fix the garbage we already have, IT continues to force new (broken) systems on us. It doesn't matter to them if it's right - just that it's done. All that...

    Advice to Management

Continue to stand up and fight for what we actually need from IT. You may never win but the people that work for you can see you fighting for us and we appreciate it. Change the dress code. It's such a small thing that would have a huge impact on the majority of the people that work here.
