I worked at CERN (More than a year)

    Pros

Great international environment, where it is not only curated but also fosters cross-pollination from many different disciplines.

    Cons

I was paid far less than my counterparts. I learned a month before leaving that HR would be updating the pay grade for my position. Employees here are mostly scientists and disregard respect for non-scientific employees. That is to say that you are only valued for your education. Individuals sought tenure and once after receiving it, many would start slacking. Worst of all offenses was the fact that cultural stereotypes were openly used to explain behaviors i.e. italians, the Brits, Greeks, and so on. This was back in 2012 before the new DG.

  7. "Graduate researcher at CERN"

    Pros

Working at CERN, you get to work for a leading-edge science experiment. The technology is incredible and you learn so much from the physicists and engineers in your collaboration. You also pick up analytic skills that are highly desired in today's workforce.

    Cons

It's difficult to get your research through the entire collaboration. Everyone has an opinion about how to best conduct an analysis, and it's your responsibility to convince others your doing everything correctly. Concerns over the smallest details of an analysis can delay a publication by several months. Sometimes this is warranted, but other times it's minutiae.

    Advice to Management

The collaborations are structured into working groups based on particular physics topics. This allows you to discuss analyses among physicists familiar with the topic before presented to the collaboration as a whole.
