I worked at Community Health Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good coworkers, flexible and understanding bosses, business casual dress code, big company, lots of business growth and acquisitions.

    Cons

Lack of strategic management. Lack of professional development or growth opportunities, especially for nonclinical staff. Lack of reward/raises/recognition/appreciation. Lack of meaningful work. Kind of a slow, dinosaur company, struggling to get up to speed with the times. Bureaucratic.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate, acknowledge, and reward your top performers. Overhaul your compensation policies and give better raises to attract and retain top talent.

I worked at Community Health Systems full-time

    Pros

The location and offices are nice, and there are some very nice people working there.

    Cons

Underqualified people are hired, but are not given adequate training. The department I worked in would change the accounts of the failing workers and give them to the qualified workers. So the relationships never develop between the home office and the hospital, clinic or lab. Once the accounts were cleaned up they went right back to lesser skilled workers.

    Advice to Management

My advice is to hire better qualified workers and keep the accounts cleaned up. In the long run it will cost less and would run more efficiently with fewer but better skilled workers. It would also create more of a team effort if everyone could pull their weight.

    Pros

Ability to work from home. Good immediate manager.

    Cons

Lack of support to bring in top talent and pay average wages to keep top talent.

    Advice to Management

Build from within can only take you so far. You must bring in higher level managers to ensure proper support to maintain safe environment for patients.

    Pros

CHS is a large management company that owns approximately 150 hospitals. They are very good at making a hospital profitable.

    Cons

CHS focus too much on making each of their managed hospitals turn a profit instead of allowing local management identify their specific needs of their community.

    Advice to Management

Work with local facility management to better identify and accommodate their unique needs rather than applying the same management philosophies to all as if they are the same. My local hospitals are part of a market, but we were consistently treated as 3+ small individual hospitals rather than a collective of larger facilities. This caused both disconnects for the employees and more importantly the patients.

    Pros

The company seems to invest in profit driven locations and manages to the bottom line in this for profit organization

    Cons

They often flex up and down with contracted staff to meet expected or less expected sustainment, leading to inconsistency or incongruity of support

I have been working at Community Health Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The cost of benefits at CHS is comparable and cheaper than that of other companies at this time.

    Cons

The company makes it appear that advancement is readily available to employees, however it only appears that way.

    Advice to Management

Micromanagement really doesn't help a team grow. It disgruntles employees and causes them to be less productive. Also, do not be afraid to terminate employees. If an employee is not pulling their weight, they need to be reprimanded and terminated accordingly.

    Pros

Great company if you're just looking for the option to work a straight 8, go home, and not grow.

    Cons

Growth options are extremely limited. Very little diversity in the company, and poor versatility in the leadership staff.

    Advice to Management

Review the qualifications of ALL employees and not just a select few who you know on a personal level.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Community Health Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are nice, average office environment, was able to get some good experience

    Cons

I used to really enjoy this place but, CHS has lost their way. In the last several years things are continually getting worse. They have implemented a new policy across the board of 1% raises and 3% for promotions. This is an insult when your told you consistently knock it out of the park for your work. Anyone who accepts something like that as a long term plan is a fool. Small perks are continually being cut, and many positions are not being back filled (even at Dir. and Manager levels). This company is checking more and more of the boxes for things to watch out for with a sinking ship.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the old leadership. We need a CEO who actually has vision for the company, not how to retire with the most money.
