IMO your resume/experience gets you the interview at Target and your personality and ability to fit into the culture and get along with your future team get you the job. Target culture has been dubbed 'high school popularity' which is somewhat correct in that who you know helps as much as what you know, but it's not as negative as that may sound. Target HQ is so big (9,000+ in one location) that you may be doing great work but if no one knows about it it's harder to move up. It's very much an environment where you have to sing your own praises regularly. Also, people respect the mentality "I don't know, but will find out." because that often goes unsaid.
