Good place for a first job, but pretty shabby overall - Courtesy Clerk/Cashier Safeway Employee Review

Pros

Hours were generously dolled out, and very flexible. I made what felt like a lot of money for a highschooler, and the work was relatively simple. Good place to get experience in dealing with customers. The management up to and including Store Director were all competent and nice.

Cons

Large amounts of homeless customers/loiterers. While I have no problem with most customers like this, there would be occasional knife fights or "disruptive incidents" in and around the parking lot, or bottle return machines. There was hardly any sense of direction from management past the front line. Also, there was a strange system that tracked and ranked checkers on whether they entered produce manually or by looking it up. Generally an unpleasant job to do.

Pros

Nothing at all, only work at Safeway if you're about to be literally homeless

Cons

Genuinely hellish work environment. Management is lazy and absent, customers are the most disrespectful and clueless I have ever encountered. Complete unrealistic labor allocation and expectations. As a PIC, I have to run 9 SCO robots, unlock cases for customers, perform transactions at Customer Service, and answer external phone calls. Customers rightly get frustrated at the complete lack of care by corporate, and take it out on employees.
