I have been working at Gallagher full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture at Gallagher is one of the best in the country, which is one of the reasons we merged our organization with them. The opportunities to grow and become better at what we do are available to everyone. There is also great flexibility in work-life balance. Management is supportive and provides coaching and mentoring.

    Cons

As an extension of a larger office on the other side of the state, sometimes it feels like we're left out of things. Though that's only due to geographical distances.

    Advice to Management

Small and Mid-Sized Market offices feel more exposed to competition than that of larger markets, and need to feel supported more during transitions after an acquisition. They chose to merge with Gallagher because of the capabilities and culture, but sometimes they don't quite understand all of the capabilities that come with being part of the Gallagher family.

I worked at Gallagher full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn about all various lines of insurance benefits. Got some great training in actuarial work and how rates are set among carriers. Opportunities to work with a wide range of client sizes. Resources available to get the job done are endless. Really learned how to analyze claims and negotiate pricing of renewals, and gained some skills that have spawned a blaze of offers.

    Cons

If a mistake is made people seem more occupied about pointing the blame then trying to solve the issue. This has been improving though and they are making great strides in trying to create a better team atmosphere.

Tends to be this strange "brand management" in which personnel get to attend events often based on personality type rather then who would actually benefit and grow from the various conferences and carrier provided training.

Pay/benefits aren't the best BUT they are willing to hire people with no benefit experience so it's a great starting point for your career.

    Advice to Management

There is always conversations about bringing analysts into the strategy decision, but it's hard to do that when the client management team won't bring analysts into the fold on what they are trying to accomplish. Let Analysts attend client meetings, the big carrier events and conferences. It's insulting to brand manage personal attendance at client meetings and industry wide learning opportunities as it makes people feel they aren't welcomed at the company. Put less worry on what other people will judge on your employee's personality, and more support into that employee learning and improving on their skills.

I have been working at Gallagher full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Love the people and the culture. I respect ethisphere award. Meaningful. I appreciate having the opportunity to share insights with colleagues at Corporate and in other regions.

    Cons

Difficult to get things done. Red tape. Corporate decisions do not seem logical. Pay freeze is a challenge and we need Comp study to determine if pay is competitive.

    Advice to Management

Streamline decision making to make it easier to get things done.

    I worked at Gallagher full-time

    Pros

Great company. Home office leadership superb. Ethics is ultra important. Good growth potential. Resources are first class. Well respected. Founding story is amazing. A Gallagher still runs the operation.

    Cons

Local level can have political challenges. Lots of acquisitions which dilute the culture. Nepotism and favoritism can be very unfair.

    Advice to Management

Continue to establish policy and procedures that are more consistent for internal career patching. Take the same approach in training and developing employees as you do the internship program.

I worked at Gallagher full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The Company is likable enough and has some talented people.
    It is also successful.

    Cons

The company lacks camaraderie and atmosphere and is a dull work environment.
They do not believe in giving pay raises and promotions which results in huge staff turnover and a flight of talent. The path to promotion can be blocked by managers who play favorites and promote their favorites instead of basing such decisions on ability or merit. Technological advancement may result in your job function largely being performed by someone located in a Service Center in India.

    Advice to Management

    Clients want consistency.
You cannot create a Company Culture with an underpaid staff whose basic needs are not being met.
Please care as much about people as you do about numbers.
