I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at AutoZone (Placerville, CA) in Jan 2010
Interview
The interview was more about the company and what it can offer (except a decient pay plan). It seemed to just be about getting a warm body in a position as long as your physically able and could pass the background test. I did not get a good professional feeling from the hiring manager.

I applied in-person. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at AutoZone
Interview
It was very brief and easy, interviewer was respectful of my time and was able to ask the right questions and no fillers. Nothing should be done differently during the process.
Basic retail interview, was not very focused on car knowledge. Are you reliable, when can you work, and what are your goals basically were the focus. Store manager does all store level interviews
Took a test about cars. Was not too hard. Asked some questions about customer service. Pretty basic. Was offered the job a few hours later via email. One day of orientation.
