    I have been working at DigitalOcean full-time

    Pros

    The desire to help and share knowledge is something I have never experienced in any of my previous jobs. Was I just unlucky or DO is truly special in this regard?

    Cons

    I expected to see a little less engineering technical debt for a company of this age and size, but all in all nothing too scary.

    DigitalOcean Response

    May 15, 2018 – VP, People

    I think we are pretty special! Being a deliberatively developmental organization means we share knowledge and help each other learn and grow. That's how we continually raise the bar on performance... More

    Pros

    Wonderful smart people, great benefits. Excellent working environment for both remote and office employees

    Cons

    If you're not on first shift you kinda miss out on a lot of the meetings and hangouts. Can get a bit lonely.

    I have been working at DigitalOcean full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Great benefits/perks
    * Overall, smart people to work with
    * Interesting problems and scale

    Cons

    * Can not hire management worth a damn. Company has had three different heads of engineering (CTO, CTO, VP) that have lasted a year or less. Each departure was probably different, at least two were removed due to incompetence,
    * Can not fire bad talent (good lord there are some dinosaurs who contribute literally nothing to the company other than unneeded last minute opinions/blockers)
    * Easy to get frustrated because of the glacier like pace everything moves at

    I have been working at DigitalOcean full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Remote work is the ultimate perk.
    Pays above market for a reason.

    Cons

    Engineering is totally dysfunctional team. Directors/Managers focused on upwards reporting & status updates & serious turf wars. Everything has an "angle".
    "Fun culture" is having a video on your presentation.
    Many facilitators, not many people actually doing work.
    Don't bother bringing new ideas to the table. They will only be heard if coming from a select group of old-timers.

    Advice to Management

    More technical leadership, less smoke & mirrors.
    Stop referring to people as 'resources'.
    Understand that good people can find a job anywhere, you need us more than we need you ;)
