I have been working at DigitalOcean full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    * Amazing remote culture and laser-sharp focus on making that work
    * Highly-skilled group of people who take their jobs seriously
    * Really interesting at-scale problems to solve across the entire tech stack
    * Current management is very open and honest about the challenges, no visible "head in sand" moments so far
    * I like a company that knows at which inflection points in growth changes in management are required. From what I can see, DO has no problem making those calls

    Cons

    * Rapid growth (both in head count and in product offering) have created a degree of instability and disorganization, particularly at the process level
    * The tech stack is very much in flux at the moment, with layers of legacy, experimentation, and modern sitting atop (and within) one-another; it's chaotic
    * I struggle to think of anything else worthwhile that would warrant memorializing in perpetuity. So far it's been a pretty great place to work

    Advice to Management

Management sets the tone for the company, and Mark's optimistic yet open approach to communication has been fantastic to experience. Keep doing that at all levels, even when it's painful, embarrassing, frustrating or infuriating. Honesty is respect.

Keep listening to the folks in the trenches. So far it seems that everyone wants to build the best bug-free, performant thing they can for the customers. PRSS is a great initiative, showing the team that their pains are both as important as, and synonymous with, the customer's pains. It only really works when both sides of the equation are satisfied.

I have been working at DigitalOcean full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - The hiring process was a bit long, but probably one of the best, most straightforward hiring experiences I have been through.

    - The remotee-first culture is fantastic, really setting the bar for how to operate a company in a distributed fashion.

    - There is a lot of cutting-edge technology to work with/on, and a lot of smart, helpful people to work on it with you.

    - The path forward is starting to materialize with a new CEO and executive suite at the helm, with (seemingly) a lot of opportunity for innovation and career growth within the company.

    Cons

    - A lot of longer-term employees are starting to churn. It isn't clear why people leave all the time, but this can be off-putting or demoralizing when just starting out, not being sure if they have better context on whether we are headed in "the right direction."

    - It is not clear that there is strong technical leadership at the top. This has led to a lot of disparity at the bottom, which needs to be cleaned up if we want to grow at the pace we have been recently.

    Advice to Management

Love is what makes us great. It's a core value, but it does not always seem to be put at the forefront by some. It is one of the things I noticed during hiring and continue to notice by those employees exemplifying the values, but there are others who appear to have ulterior motives.

    Pros

Great product and Customers love DO
Love the people in the company
Amazing leadership: most of them have been brought on recently

    Cons

There are other orgs in the company that have early employees who fell into a leadership role and are struggling to lead.

    Advice to Management

Love the direction the company is headed.

I have been working at DigitalOcean full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

fast paced, risk embracing, developer centric culture trying to build a platform that punches up against the competition. lots of energy, good culture initiatives and flexible work life balance

    Cons

due to the rate of growth in hiring there's a constant churn of new folks which can make finding the right team to engage difficult. Due to rate of change in environment there is a lack of formalized process in many areas. Senior Management often presents a less than crisp vision of where projects are headed

    Cons

Alignment and focus will be key as business grows. Executive team needs to be transparent, communicative, and responsive to rest of team.

    Advice to Management

Keep lines of communication open. Understand what makes the culture great and what needs to evolve. Always look forward, not backward.

    Pros

amazingly smart people that are driven, passionate and just generally good people who care about making products and experiences that are elegant yet simple

    Cons

the company is maturing and undergoing a lot of change with a new CEO at the helm, so the path isn't always 100% clear yet, but if you thrive in a place where you can create a bit of your own destiny and don't stress about change, then no problem!

    Advice to Management

mark, you already are having a tremendously positive impact on helping this organization "grow up" so keep it coming! and please help champion diversity at the leadership level as it is lacking yet is so important.

    Pros

Smart people. Great lower+mid-level management. Extremely excellent remote culture. Awesome market and customers. Get to work on fun/hard problems at scale. Pays well. Great opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Upper management hasn't been very stable, but that's not really a negative, just "not awesome".

The company is growing too, and that automatically means things change. As far as I've seen, it's usually for the better, but I understand earlier employees feeling like things are wildly different now.

    Advice to Management

None. Hope to see more stability in upper management, but it seems like that's already happening!
