I have been working at MapR Technologies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Plenty to learn both from the technology the company is building as well as how to apply it to real problems at massive scale.

    Cons

Certain people in management are more concerned that they have the idea rather than letting their team create and foster an idea. Response often take the form of "I did that exact thing back at this other huge company 20 years ago". This generally creates the problem that those people are living in the past. This is NOT all managers, but there are a couple like that within the org.

    Advice to Management

Get the right people for those upper management roles.

    Pros

Highly innovative approach to data ingest, store, security and analytics. Fast and scalable.

    Cons

Company needs to push their innovations harder in the market and emphasize the many weaknesses in pure open source plays

    Advice to Management

keep innovating and market much more aggressively

    Pros

I think the reviews here show consensus that the technology is good, and the marketing has big room for improvement.

    ##work from home flexibility
##not a lot of egos, generally speaking

##market is big and still immature

    Cons

##Does not feel like there channels to provide input to senior leadership, and that even if there were, they would embrace the ideas.

    Advice to Management

A couple of suggestions to consider.

John (CEO) portrays a calm, in-control, demeanor. But the company really needs to pivot it's GTM approach and show greater sense of urgency. The question is does CEO have the humility and leadership courage to face reality and admit that what worked in the past (specifically the tech-heavy technical marketing) isn't working today? That technical marketing approach is a crutch that's been leaned on far too long, and the results stagnated the company...at a time there should have been hypergrowth. Look at the data.

Also, get the remaining employees fired up. There has been a fairly consistent exodus of good talent which is controllable, so get the ones that are still there fired up to be there. Give them hope, a vision, energy. Pay raises and other cash bonuses might help stave off more departures.

    Pros

Great people and advanced technology. If you like to work, there is more to do than you can get done every day, and that's a good thing when you are building something from the ground up.

    Cons

This Company could benefit from a Sales-led culture, given their stage in the VC-backed timeline (late stage, should be high growth). It appears that they are uncertain about who they are and where they are headed.

    Advice to Management

Shift to a sales and customer-led approach. Act growth-minded. Invest in your people. The top professionals in every industry are obsessive with continuous improvement and commit to it with investment. Listen to your customers and act on their feedback. Your customers deserve it and your Company will benefit.

I have been working at MapR Technologies full-time

    Pros

The culture and office environment make it very enjoyable to go to work everyday. Not to mention, the compensation is very good. Finally, the company has very innovative technology.

    Cons

I will admit that with innovation brings challenge, the technology is hard to learn. Finally, similar to all small/start up type companies, there are a lot of changes.

    Advice to Management

    1. Stay laser-focused on the execution
    2. Retain your best engineers, stop with the needless pep-talk, give tangible incentives
