    Pros

Work with brilliant people, great health benefits.

    Cons

As a start-up, the organization is still in flux and changes often, which means projects are started and cut at a moment's notice. You will be expected to work many hours, much more than 40.

I worked at MapR Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The best technology in the space - one of it's kind.

    Cons

    - Low IQ and Common Sense of the incoming Sales and Sales Management from Oracle. Many of them were fired from Oracle due to poor performance. Oracle sales folks don't have talent as the products sold themselves.
    - Sales Engineers that quietly do the heavy lifting are not valued.
    - Product Management & Marketing is so bad that they leave out of shame. Only the worst of the lot are on board.

    Advice to Management

The greatest asset at MapR is the platform, the people behind building the platform and people who know to position & sell/implement platform (Sales Engineers & Professional Services Engineers). Respect that, and maybe the few good ones remaining will stay.

    Pros

Differentiated product with unique IP and integration with other technologies

    Cons

    - New management has made it difficult to conduct business with customers
    - Working remote is very difficult
    - Hiring unqualified employees that are former personal connections and don't add any value
    - Management does not communicate to field (maybe once every three months via phone)
    - Product Management is scattered with no CTO, which is degrading the product
    - No technology vision, direction, or instruction
    - No understanding of market, how to sell and overall landscape
    - Promised IPO that has slipped last 3 years
    - Highly technical sale, most of the bright technical people have left, leaving a steep learning curve for new employees
    - No marketing,
    - SDR/ISR team is mismanaged and does not contribute to the business

    Advice to Management

    - Interact with the employees, it makes a big difference and impact on morale.
    - Take the time to get feedback from the field outside of San Jose
    - Need a CTO for better product management, direction and engineering

I have been working at MapR Technologies full-time

    Pros

Technology is disruptive and differentiated, so there's a significant market opportunity. We also have some extremely bright people across all functions. As a whole everyone I've met/worked with has been friendly and supportive.

    Cons

The field sales team looks fairly heterogeneous. Overwhelmingly white, male, with a background at (mostly) Oracle or some other prominent massive tech company. Are we hiring the right skillset for what the co needs today, vs. down the road? Second, woman in leadership positions is also lacking. Finally, we haven't figured out our culture. We don't have a mission, it seems, beyond bringing to market a really compelling technology. But aren't we supposed to me more than that?

    Advice to Management

    1. Consider the values and culture you want this company to represent. 2. Emphasize diversity, across skillsets, gender, background experience, etc. This is such a hot-button issue in tech today, and our company is falling into the same patterns that we traditionally see. 3. Emphasize branding. What is the MapR brand? What does it represent? We don't have much brand recognition, yet, so we can build.

    Pros

The recent 50 million mega funding round backs the promising future and signals the upcoming IPO. Across the board, cohesiveness and trust prosper in the company. The significant flexibility is granted to the engineers. The management is inspiration oriented, which encourages engineers to work and contribute at their best abilities.

The products span from proprietary to open source technologies. The converged data platform is clearly the trend of the industry, and the ambition of the company aligns with its implementation. More importantly, transparency is emphasized so informative messages are shared among people. People are blessed for being connected in this environment.

    Cons

Really cannot think of any. It is probably the best employer I have personally associated with.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing the great job. Hire the best people. Build the best products. Close the most deals.

    Pros

Product has significant differentiation and is proven in demanding customer environments. Company positioned well to be relevant to a broader big data customer community beyond Hadoop.
Significant wins at some impressive major accounts.

Fair to poor execution in some key areas (cloud, marketing, partners, customer, community)
Longer term leadership positions may be holding back company progress
New Oracle sales hires seem naive, entitled and pampered.
Marketing underfunded and lacking in direction
Poor internal communication. Executives are not accessible and don't inspire an inclusive atmosphere

    Advice to Management

pay more than lip service to company culture. Don't let stuffy upper management take all the fun out of the company. improve internal communications to non-sales departments
