How a Job became a Career

Jul 13, 2021 - Software Development Manager in Lake Forest, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

This week I celebrated my 30th Anniversary working at Grainger. How can someone stay at a company so long? It's because of the variety and the opportunities Grainger has presented me over the years. I averaged a new position (or promotion) about ever 2 years by moving around and up. Great benefits, great people and opportunities around every corner

      Cons

If you don't advocate for yourself, you could have trouble with work/life balance. Don't do that! Stuff moves fast around here, if you don't stop and look around, you might miss something in your personal life you will regret later.

      Great Benefits and Caring Staff

Dec 9, 2021 - Customer Experience Representative in Janesville, WI
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

-Leaders really do a lot to keep morale high. You really feel like the company genuinely cares about you and your well-being. -There is a lot of opportunity for growth and development for those who want it, possibly even more so now during the pandemic. They really like to promote from within the company. -Great benefits and lots of PTO even in your first year of employment. -LGBTQ+ friendly. Very supportive and inclusive environment. -HR concerns are taken seriously, dealt with swiftly. -Work from home until further notice due to Covid (some training is on site) but there is also a permanent work from home team that has openings every now and then. -They take feedback very seriously and are always interested in new ideas and suggestions and implement changes based on employee feedback on a regular and frequent basis.

      Cons

-It is very fast paced to begin with and it can feel very overwhelming during times of national crisis such as a national disasters or a pandemic. -Call volumes are very high as Grainger competes to hire during the pandemic. -Many amenities normally accessible on site are not available due to Covid (employee gym, cafeteria) -Work from home until further notice due to Covid (ha!)

      Product Information Leadership Failing Miserably

Dec 8, 2021 - Product Information in Chicago, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Benefits are really good - Team members and business partners are generally friendly and helpful - Opportunities for movement within the company

      Cons

      - Unrealistic timelines for projects - No work/life balance - Expectations not communicated consistently to team members - Unjustified favoritism - Leadership lacking soft skills - Lack of mandatory implicit bias training and how to be an POC and LGBTQIA+ ally. - Method of assessing employees for annual review is highly subjective and not based on clear data provided to the employee. If you consistently get a 'consistently meets expectations' then they basically consider you almost ready for a promotion. It's virtually impossible with the workload and aggressive timelines to go above and beyond in any way. There has definitely been an ongoing mass exodus of folks from Grainger in merchandising and supply management, particularly product information teams in the past year, but leadership does not seem to care about retaining talented staff. We were treated as assembly line workers not people with graduate degrees and decades of experience who don't need to be micromanaged.
