Software Developer – Java & GIS
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer for our client in Columbus, Ohio to develop, enhance, and maintain mission-critical, customer-facing enterprise applications. This role works across both front-end user interfaces and backend business logic, with applications running on Tomcat application servers.
The Senior Software Developer will develop new features for future releases, resolve production defects, and maintain GIS and map data databases across production and lower environments. This position is part of a small, experienced development team and offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on an enterprise-level application relied upon by customers.
GIS experience is preferred for this position. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in Enterprise Java development along with hands-on experience working with ESRI GIS technologies, ArcGIS, spatial databases, and related scripting and development tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, test, and maintain enterprise-level customer-facing applications.
- Work across front-end user interfaces and backend business logic within a Java-based application environment.
- Collaborate with Business Systems Analysts and QA teams to establish clear requirements, shared understanding, and alignment throughout the development lifecycle.
- Maintain ESRI/ArcGIS databases, map data, and related scripts across production and lower environments.
- Publish, manage, and support GIS services using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Server.
- Develop and maintain applications and integrations using Java, JavaScript, Python, and SQL.
- Partner with technical leaders to design solutions, evaluate development tools, and assess third-party products.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum development processes while remaining flexible to support waterfall and project-based delivery approaches when needed.
- Design innovative solutions for complex technical challenges that extend beyond straightforward coding requirements.
- Participate in proof-of-concept development in collaboration with senior technical resources.
- Troubleshoot and resolve production defects and application issues.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to provide production support.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 7+ years of Enterprise Java/JEE development experience.
- Demonstrated professional GIS experience in an enterprise application or software development environment.
- Strong proficiency with the ESRI GIS platform.
- Hands-on experience with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Server, including publishing and managing GIS services.
- Experience working with spatial databases and SQL Server.
- Strong programming experience with Java, JavaScript, and Python.
- Experience developing and supporting customer-facing or mission-critical enterprise applications.
- Experience working with application servers such as Tomcat.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot or LLM-based code generation tools, to improve development velocity, code quality, and maintainability.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to design solutions for complex technical challenges.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Business Analysts, QA professionals, technical leaders, and other developers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Spring Boot.
- Front-end development experience with Angular, React, or Vue.js.
- Experience supporting GIS-enabled enterprise applications.
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum development teams.
- Experience developing proof-of-concept solutions and evaluating new development tools or technologies.

Physical Requirements
This position requires frequent communication and the ability to exchange information effectively with team members and stakeholders. The individual must be able to remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the workday and regularly operate a laptop, computer equipment, and telephone.
The position may occasionally require movement within an office environment, positioning to access files or computer equipment, and lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds. The role requires frequent viewing of information displayed on computer screens.
Occasional travel within the United States may be required and may involve automobile or air travel and overnight lodging.

Pay: $95,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
