I have been working at Cengage full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

great, dedicated, passionate, smart, kind colleagues
focuses on what matters in education--the students, their needs, their reality, their goals.
in recent years there has been an increased focus on investing in employee training, engagement, and empowerment
content teams are working very hard to transform the learning experience to give students the best learning materials, delivered where they want them.

    Cons

So many changes! We can't get our bearing between one reorg and the next.
Too many technology silos providing competing platforms without a unifying vision.
A frustrating disconnect between providing great products and getting customers to use them.
benefits aren't competitive, salary increases are stagnant, and bonuses have been greatly reduced for most employees (and not paid for several years because of the challenging market conditions).

    Advice to Management

Now that you've cut the Cengage workforce down to the bones, please start fairly compensating the folks you have who've taken on increased workloads and new responsibilities. We are doing the work, and you shouldn't have to leave and come back to get a reasonable raise.

    Pros

The best thing about working at Cengage is that there are some really great people working there. They offer good benefits and competitive salaries for the industry. The San Francisco office has bike parking within the building and is convenient to public transportation.

    Cons

The change from print to digital has been a very slow process.

I have been working at Cengage full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Heath coverage and amazing perks. Flexibility and PTO. Company is very future driven and progressive. Overall everyone is amazing and the dynamic is good. Lots of remote opportunities.

    Cons

Late and long hours. Industry can be a little tumultuous but Cengage is looking to avoid any ramifications of a changing publishing industry

I have been working at Cengage full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Cengage embraces the idea of continual innovation and growth, I feel like our Management team listens to employees and is quick to implement changes or new ideas if they make us stronger. The people I work with here are the best I have ever worked with in my career; passionate, smart and fun. We work in an industry that is changing rapidly and I love working for a company that is embracing the change with confidence rather than holding on to old paradigms.

    Cons

There are so many moving parts that it can be difficult to stay current on our products and processes. Our support and marketing teams provide a TON of great resources, but it can be overwhelming.

    Advice to Management

It takes longer for initiatives to take root with our field sales staff. Involve Sales Management early and often to get faster buy in.

I have been working at Cengage full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Culture is positive and inclusive. Teamwork and being held accountable to and for each other is a part of our credo, and we take pride in embracing strong values in all we do. If you work hard, your efforts will be rewarded.

    Cons

Very fast paced with a lot of independent and virtual learning required (this is not a problem for self-starters).

    Advice to Management

The biggest challenge is on-boarding new employees in our fast-paced business. We are getting better at providing tools to get new hires up to speed. However, we may need to streamline the learning so that it is not duplicated or overwhelming-especially for new hires starting in the thick of the selling season.

I worked at Cengage full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Environment with great international diversity. Employees will learn alot about working in a global economy and learn skills, (collaboration, communication) crucial to thrive in today's work place.

    Cons

Outsources all possible jobs to reduce labor costs. Outsource positions do not require special off-shore skills. Discounts skill, contribution and knowledge of U.S. based staff. They're considered expendable. Train your replacement - common place.

    Advice to Management

Find a survival niche. Get out of education market that depends on disruptive, creative technology. Cut costs and bail out your investors.
