I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 20 years

    Pros

The leadership of the company has been jaw-droppingly motivated, visionary, and transparent. They have turned a company haunted by downturns in the market into a trendsetter that is adapting profitably. Along the way they have been committed to employee growth and job satisfaction. I am thrilled with what we are doing for learning. Cengage is a good company with a good purpose!

    Cons

The education market is highly scrutinized by media and government.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. In 20 years with the company, you are the only management group tackling the real problems, and doing so successfully.

    Pros

Cengage Learning, simply put, is about people helping people. One student at a time, one instructor at a time, one person at a time---and they do this all the time, each day, every day, 24/7.

    Cons

None. If you get the opportunity to work with Cengage, do it.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to embrace what's next.

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

-Bonus/commission in sales can be very good if you exceed your goal -Boston office has some decent benefits in retrospect -Coworkers are great

    Cons

-Management can be terrible (obviously depends on team). In my case I had an extreme micromanager that was negatively impacting the whole team. HR does not care about manager evaluation or the happiness/health of employees. -Little room for base salary increase -Constantly restructuring and making cuts -Travel budgets are decreasing -Quiet office with no life to it -Talks about having an incredible culture that cannot...

    Advice to Management

-Start anonymously surveying employees and take the results seriously -Provide ongoing management training -Ensure more groups are working together and not siloed. Even within a division/channel, our teams were extremely separated -Move away from mid year and full year commission structure to a more regular (monthly or quarterly structure) so employees are constantly motivated -Clearly identify roles and be transparent...

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Overall, there's a great culture and the work is interesting and rewarding.

    Cons

Inconsistent values. For example, despite months of internal messaging about the importance of quality learning design, product leadership will still mandate that teams quickly churn out "fluff" products with little very budget, almost guaranteeing poor quality.

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great time off benefits, really value the employees

    Cons

The sales target goals are ridiculous. There is a huge downward trend in sales for the past for years and the set the target as if we are able to make it magically turn around in one year, with the release of CU even though it cuts at our sales even more.

    Advice to Management

    Set better sales targets.

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Cengage is a leader in ed tech at the college level. Constantly adapting to new information, the company’s executives manage change smartly.

    Cons

Constant change can make for a challenging work experience, but even so, the company does all it can to help people manage it well by communicating frankly and understanding people’s needs.

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than a year

      Pros

-Excellent work environment -Laid back WFH rules and decent work-life balance -Free snacks in the kitchen, often with leftover pizza -Most peers were nice and easy to talk to

      Cons

-The entire prior engineering team for my product was fired before arrival. Other team mates were just as new as me. -Job description emphasized modern stack, actual stack was very old, clunky and no plans to upgrade. Often brought up in meetings that the business wasn’t sure if they were investing in our team’s product. -Broken deployment pipeline, server team didn’t seem to have a disaster plan in place, Software...

      Advice to Management

Get a hold of problems before they get out of hand. And if it’s too late, find a way to keep the better of the tribal knowledge on payroll full time for an adequate period of time. At least until the error logging system isn’t filing away 20 errors per minute.
