This position is intended for a hands-on engineer who is comfortable working in both a manufacturing environment and a laboratory/testing environment. The role will support thermal spray production, process development, coating evaluation, qualification testing, troubleshooting, quality documentation, and continuous improvement.
Prior thermal spray experience is not required. We are looking for someone with strong mechanical aptitude, good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work closely with production operators, quality personnel, lab personnel, and customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Train under experienced personnel to learn thermal spray coating processes, equipment, and applications.
- Work in both manufacturing and laboratory environments to support production, testing, and process development.
- Support daily production by troubleshooting process, equipment, tooling, masking, fixturing, and quality issues.
- Assist with coating process development, testing, and qualification activities.
- Prepare, evaluate, and document test samples and coating results.
- Review customer specifications, drawings, purchase orders, and coating requirements.
- Help develop and maintain work instructions, process sheets, technical plans, and inspection requirements.
- Analyze coating results, including thickness, hardness, bond strength, metallography, visual condition, and other coating characteristics.
- Support aerospace and industrial coating programs requiring tight process control and documentation.
- Work with production and quality teams to improve process repeatability, throughput, and first-pass yield.
- Assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions for internal and customer quality concerns.
- Help identify opportunities for improved tooling, fixturing, masking, equipment setup, and workflow.
- Support compliance with applicable quality system requirements, including AS9100 and Nadcap.
- Participate in continuous improvement, safety, and cost-reduction initiatives.
QualificationsRequired
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Applied Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field.
- Ability and willingness to work in both shop-floor manufacturing areas and laboratory/testing areas.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Good math, measurement, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working around industrial equipment, production personnel, and lab/testing equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Ability to follow safety procedures and quality requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with operators, supervisors, quality personnel, lab personnel, and management.
- Willingness to learn a specialized technical process from the ground up.
Preferred, but Not Required
- Experience with manufacturing, machining, welding, coatings, heat treatment, aerospace, or materials processing.
- Experience working in a lab, test, inspection, metallography, or materials evaluation environment.
- Familiarity with CAD, tooling, fixtures, or mechanical design.
- Exposure to quality systems such as ISO 9001, AS9100, Nadcap, or customer-specific requirements.
- Experience with process improvement, root cause analysis, or corrective action.
- Basic understanding of metallurgy, materials, surface engineering, or coating evaluation.
Work Environment
This position includes a mix of office, manufacturing floor, and laboratory/testing work. The employee will spend time around thermal spray equipment, coating booths, masking areas, inspection equipment, test samples, metallography or coating evaluation activities, and production personnel.
The role requires someone who is comfortable moving between hands-on shop-floor support and detailed technical documentation/testing work. Safety training and personal protective equipment will be provided as required.
