Job Title: Senior Drafter
Pay Based on Experience
Job Overview
The senior drafter position is in a growing engineering firm. We are looking for someone to maintain standards, develop new standards, integrate AI in the drafting process, and work with an existing team of engineers and drafters. Our work focuses on the electric power infrastructure industry, but we also design a variety of different types of projects. This position is a key position requiring interfacing with engineering design and the client to develop a polished, consistent and correct set of drawings and plans. Work would include comprehensive technical drawings, schematics, and 3D digital models for complex electrical systems. This role spans traditional utility distribution networks, high-voltage substations, renewable energy generation systems, and mission-critical hyperscale data center power infrastructures. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between high-voltage grid interconnection and complex indoor critical power distribution systems, translating engineering concepts into construction-ready blueprints.
Key Responsibilities
Quality Control: This position requires the ability to review drawing plans and standards for efficiency, control, quality and consistency for all drawings sent to clients and owners.
Multi-Discipline Drafting: Prepare detailed 2D schematics and 3D models for overhead/underground distribution lines, renewable energy collector systems, substation layouts, and indoor data center power layouts.
Power System Drafting: Develop detailed wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams (SLDs), and physical layouts for data center power chains, including Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), backup generators, and Power Distribution Units (PDUs).
Space Planning & Collision Checking: Create accurate 3D spatial layouts of electrical rooms and data center white space to ensure proper equipment clearances, maintenance access, and code-compliant separation from mechanical/HVAC systems.
Standards & Code Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with utility drafting standards, national engineering codes (NESC, NEC, IEEE), and specific data center tier requirements (e.g., Uptime Institute standards for redundancy).
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate directly with electrical engineers, structural designers, BIM managers, and field construction teams to integrate multi-discipline redlines and field modifications.
BIM & Lifecycle Management: Maintain strict version controls, manage complex XREFs (external references), and contribute to comprehensive Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows for large-scale facility lifecycles.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
Advanced CAD/BIM Software: Mastery of Autodesk AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and Revit (BIM). Experience with MicroStation or specialized power systems software is a strong plus.
Critical Power Literacy: Strong understanding of redundant power topologies (e.g., N+1, 2N) and the physical drafting requirements for heavy electrical equipment deployment.
Geometric & Spatial Competency: Proficient in 3D spatial coordination, structural clearances, cable tray routing design, and underground duct bank detailing.
Soft Skills & Core Competencies
High-Stakes Precision: Extreme attention to detail; understanding that drawing inaccuracies can lead to costly project delays or catastrophic safety incidents in high-voltage and mission-critical environments.
Adaptability: Ability to pivot smoothly between diverse project types, from outdoor rural utility routing to highly dense, indoor industrial cleanrooms.
Project Management Alignment: Proven track record of managing tight deadlines across multiple complex project portfolios simultaneously.
Education & Experience
Education: Associate degree in Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Engineering Technology, or equivalent technical work experience.
Experience: 3 plus years of dedicated drafting experience within the power utility, heavy industrial, or mission-critical/data center construction sectors.
Key Additions to Note: Encompass offers a comprehensive benefits package, flexibility for families and competitive pay in the industry. This is an hourly position with the opportunity for overtime if desired. We are looking for someone to start immediately and pay is based on experience.
