Announcing the Candidates’ Choice Awards, the 2016 Best Places to Interview

The interview experience is a two-way street — while employers are sizing up their candidates, candidates are soaking up as much as they can about the company’s management structure, values and culture. This critical “first look” into a company can greatly influence a candidate’s outlook on the company and their desire to further pursue the application process.

When it comes to providing candidates with a welcoming, transparent, and efficient interview experience, some employers have got it down. Others companies, however, offer an interview experience that may make you want to start your job search all over again.

So which companies are getting the candidate experience right? Today, Glassdoor reveals the winners of its Candidate’s’ Choice Awards, honoring The Best Places to Interview in 2016. This award recognizes employers with the best interview experience, according to those who know best — the job candidates, and its methodology is based on Glassdoor economic research.

Specifically, we’re recognizing 50 employers who have the highest interview scores, based on positive interview ratings, interview duration and interview difficulty. Here are Glassdoor’s 50 Best Places to Interview in 2016:

1. Sherwin-Williams:

Interview Score: 88%

According to the candidates: They are friendly and honest.

Regarding the interview experience, A Manager Training Program candidate from Cleveland, OH says that the people at Sherwin-Williams are, “All friendly folks, upfront and honest, looking to hire the ‘right’ people.” Reflecting on the interview process, the candidate reports, “Never felt out of sorts or uncomfortable and made me realize this is definitely a company I would like to work for.”

2. Grant Thornton

Interview Score: 87%

According to the candidates: They emphasize fit.

An Audit Associate candidate from Jacksonville, FL appreciates Grant Thorton’s emphasis on finding the right fit: “Audit managers and partner were super down to earth and approachable. GPA and academics are important to them but they seemed to be mostly interested in getting to know me and seeing how well my personality fits in the company.

An Audit Associate candidate from Boston, MA, notes that the candidate reception the night prior to the interview was, “Very helpful because I was able to meet the people interviewing me, establish a connection before the interview, and got to know more about them on a personal level.”

3. Caterpillar

According to the candidates: It’s more than just an interview.

An engineering candidate who interviewed onsite felt that Caterpillar really took care of its visiting candidates: “Caterpillar booked/paid for my flight, rental car, hotel, and meals, as well as personal mileage on my car. The night before interviews I was given a tour of the town and taken to a nice dinner with the ‘host’ (the person responsible for guiding you around the company, answering questions, etc).”

An intern candidate values the transparent tone of the interview. “The interviewers did a good job making sure that I was comfortable and explaining what the specific questions were targeting. Once they were done asking questions they were very open to answering any questions that I had.”

4. BNY Mellon

According to the candidates: The process is transparent and comfortable.

A DLM Administrator candidate says it was, “One of the best interviews that I went on and they definitely helped me be comfortable with the process. Very straight forward process. The recruiters were very helpful when trying to set up the initial interview.”

A Summer Analyst candidate says, “Everyone was incredibly warm, friendly, and responsive. The recruiter who initially reached out to me was awesome and answered any questions I had right away. The entire process was transparent and I got a true sense of why each person wanted to be at BNY Mellon.”

A Sales Associate candidate from Phila, PA says that the interview manager was, “Very friendly and welcoming while talking and listening to me. It began to feel like I was talking to an old friend.

Another Sales Associate candidate from Sherman Oaks, CA says, “The manager made a great introduction with a background on what the position will entail…. he was formal but also super cool casual. He busted out jokes to lighten up the mood…This was probably the best interview I’ve ever experienced…”

A District Manager candidate says, “The Interview process was very professional, I met with the Regional Director as well as with 2 other District managers. 2 separate panel interviews. Each with 1 District manager and the Regional Director. It was very interactive and I was given plenty of opportunities to ask questions delve into the company & position.”

7. Southwest Airlines

According to the candidates: The experience is the opposite of uptight.

According to a Customer Care Representative candidate from Chicago, IL, the candidate experience was, “Totally opposite of regular corporate uptight interviews.” Upon arriving, the candidate was, “Taken into a fun colorful room to take selfies, yup selfies” before partaking in a conversational interview.

A Flight Attendant candidate from Dallas, TX says, They also fly you to your interview, which some airlines don’t do.”

According to the candidates: They actually want to get to know you.

An Emerging Leaders Program candidate says, “The atmosphere was very relaxed and the interview was more conversational based rather than just firing off behavioral based questions. At the end of both interviews, they left a lot of time for me to ask questions.”

A Manager candidate from Seattle, WA says, “They worked hard to get to know me, and I met with a number of people who gave me great info into the culture and corporate environment at EY. I’m excited to be beginning a new phase of my career with this team.”

A Financial Accounting Analyst candidate says that the interview experience was, “Very professional. Four different panels of three or four individuals who asked about technical experience, career goals and aspirations, and any leadership or work related experience.
